Healy Long & Jevin, which provides comprehensive concrete construction services to clients in the Mid-Atlantic region, reports that its use of the Maverick Network Solutions’ SafeRewards Card program is working to strengthen the company’s safety program by keeping safety top of mind.

“Before we put this program into place, we rewarded our core group of superintendents, carpenters, cement finishers and laborers for safe performance with an end of year bonus. Because safety is job one in our company, we wanted it to be top of mind among all of our employees, so we relied on Maverick Network Solutions to come up with an innovative way for us to offer an all-inclusive safety incentive program cost-effectively and efficiently,” said Joe Abbonizio, risk management/safety manager, Healy Long & Jevin.

To help the company meet its goal, Maverick’s solution was to customize an incentive program that rewarded the performance of all employees on a monthly basis, using a specially designed Healy Long & Jevin SafeRewards Card, which is a re-loadable prepaid debit MasterCard® card. The card is like getting a cash reward, as employees can use it anywhere MasterCard debit cards are accepted.

The company began rollout of the new safety incentive program in August of ’08, distributing the card to every employee. Each month, if employees work a minimum of 30 hours a week without a recordable injury, they all get $25 electronically deposited onto their SafeRewards Card at the end of the following month. If there is a recordable injury, no one receives the bonus.

“Because this incentive program requires everyone to be accountable to each other on the job for safety, and because immediate gratification is built into the system, the attention given to safety has definitely increased. Our employees are now coming to us a few days before the end of each month to check out the safety performance for the preceding month and to find out if they have earned the reward,” said Sean Healy, treasurer, Healy Long & Jevin.

Healy Long & Jevin expect that as the SafeRewards Card continues to be distributed to and used by employees, the company will continue to benefit from improved safety.
